REHUGO- Visual: Political Cartoon
A. Cartoon Attached - Artist:Nick Anderson.
B. This political cartoon shows the discrepancy between what the average citizen believes the
budget is being spent on based on their own selfish desires, and what the budget is actually being
spent on.
C. There are two pie charts, the one on the left simply has the budget divided up into the real
sections that it is put into in. In the right the artists attempts to show the fact that the average
American citizen in this day and age has become extremely self centered, because the second pie
chart is divided into "waste" and "Stuff that benefits me personally". This also is commenting on
the idea that the intelligence of the American citizen is relatively low, because an intelligence
citizen would be able to discern the merit in the entire budget and not simply just say that most
of it is a waste.
D. Many Americans do actually view the budget spending as this. Though this is a highly
exaggerated version of what most see it as. Unlike in the pie chart that has only "waste" and
"things that benefit me personally" most people have a third which is allotted to "necessary
spending". Though this hasty exaggeration and generalization is used to emphasize the main
idea of the political cartoon.
