Rehugo Analysis: Universal Truth

A. “A community is like a ship; everyone ought to be prepared to take the helm”-Henrik Isben

Henrik Isben was a 19th century playwright, poet and theatre director. He is considered an
important man in theatre and has made many popular plays.

“ A community is democratic only when the humblest and weakest person can enjoy the highest
civil, economic and social rights that the biggest and most powerful possesses” - A. Phillip
Randolph

A. Phillips Randolph is an African American born on 1889 in Florida. He is a civil rights leader
as well an actor. He is well known for creating famous landmarks such as the March on
Washington Movement and Brotherhood of Sleeping Car Porters.

B. Isben’s quote talks about a ship and a helm, however he does not mean this literally. His
quote is a comparison or in this case a metaphor. The helm determines what direction the ship
will go. In this case he is comparing the ship to a community, but leaves the helm compared to
everyone. This quote clarifies that a community needs helping hands. With helping hands it
can mean: community service, education, work and more. Without any of these elements a
community cannot develop. Helping hands will allow the “ship” to move in a direction that will
lead the community to happiness.

The second quote from A.Phillip Randolph talks about how important a democratic community
can be. The United States is a democratic country, in which citizens have civil rights and
opportunities to pursuit happiness. What the quotes is saying is that with these rights and
opportunities the community can find happiness and peace.

C. An example that the quote can be a relevance to today is using the elements that are helping
hands to the community. Life is based on education, but without it, life would not prosper or
develop new things. Education can convert a person to become a police officer, a fire fighter or
even a doctor. Everyday someone is in need of one of these professionals, whether it is to save
a persons life or protect citizens from danger and crime. The ships helm can help and contribute
the ship from sinking.

An example for Randolph’s quote that relates to present time is the constitution. In the
constitution, the bill of rights is listed to show what a person in a community is allowed to have
in order to help it grow. A community cannot be nourished or prosper if a person for example
was put in jail unjustly or made to get out of a restaurant just because of the color of their skin.
Natural rights is crucial because everyone is equal and not exceptions are being made.
