REHUGO Analysis: Observation: Visual

A. Cartoon Attached- artist: Brian Fairrington.

B. The societal trend being commented on this cartoon would be the gay community in the U.S. military. The “Don’t Ask, Don’t Tell” has been advertised around the country about the restriction towards the homosexual community to draft into the military.

C. The visual features a dead soldier in an American casket that is conceived as gay male since he says, “You Go Girl!” Lying next to the casket is a newspaper that says “Don’t Ask Don’t Tell Repealed.” The effectiveness towards this visual is that it is complying that either if the soldier is gay, he still fought for his country. The dialogue in this cartoon symbolizes the way some homosexual men act. “You Go Girl!” is effective of symbolizing the gay community. The casket with the American flag over it has its effectiveness by American pride and what the soldier fought for. The newspaper’s effect is the impact of what the homosexual has to go through.

D. This trend of “Don’t Ask Don’t Tell” is just another way of how America is contradicting its self. America says citizens can be free, but in reality they can’t since society is mixed up with what is good and what is bad. The homosexual community is willing to risk their lives to save our country. America is throwing away the chance of amazing soldiers fighting at war just because they have a bitter opinion.
