REHUGO – Political Cartoon

A. Attached cartoon by Ed Fischer

B. Ed Fischer’s cartoon illustrates the growing neglect society has for those who are becoming homeless. Furthermore, the cartoon demonstrates the increasing selfishness society has during a time of economic turmoil.

C. The effectiveness of the cartoon comes from the symbolism of the storage. Usually a place to store items that one is not using, the storage in which the homeless are being placed implies that the homeless are seen as useless to the public. Therefore, as the moving van drives off, it symbolizes how society will come back for what they need of the homeless when they see fit, but for now they don’t need them. Also, the van implies that the public is overflowing with homeless and need space to lock them away. In addition, since the place where the homeless are held is a storage, it implies that more are to be placed into the storage as society finds more homeless being useless to the population the same way a homeowner finds more junk to lock away.

D. As Americans find fewer jobs and flood the lower class, greater numbers of homeless will be neglected by the public. Therefore, as public interest drives away from the homeless, so does local government, one of the primary forms of prevention of poverty. No government involvement therefore sets the homeless onto the streets till they can be seen as useful once again. Also, little government involvement means fewer public agencies to address the homeless crisis, meaning the homeless are cemented into their social standing with little anyone can do to help.

REHUGO- Political Cartoon

A. Attached. The cartoon was produced by Edgar Argo.

B. The cartoon portrays a societal trend, within the entity of a family, that children want their independence and “freedom,” but at the same time are extremely dependent on their parents.

C. The cartoonist makes the cartoon effective by incorporating the rhetorical device of verbal irony as he portrays an apparent contradiction between desire and reality. In the cartoon, the little girl, who is the daughter of the parents, wants to leave the household. Usually, when a child leaves the house, he or she is of age to be able to live by his or herself and become independent. So the girl leaving the house symbolizes her desire for independence. However, she goes on to say “ who’s going to drive me?” This implies the dependence she has on her parents since shes depending on them to drive her. This is an example of a verbal irony since the dialogue in itself is a contradiction. She says she wants to leave the house and be independent, but at the same time is depending on her parents. The message is clear and effective because of this use of verbal irony.

D. People in present day society are becoming aware of the fact that children are wanting to become more independent. For example, many children are getting jobs at a young age, and teens start driving at the age of fifteen. A study from Stanford University by Professor Chancer shows the statistics within a survey. Teens across America were asked what they were most excited about after highschool. About 65% answered along the lines of: “ To leave the house and live by myself.” However, many kids do not realize how dependent they really are on their parents. For example, I used to always cry to my dad, begging him for more privacy so I can “do my own thing.” He finally told me that he will give me privacy, as long as I do my own laundry, make my own food, and buy my own stuff. I went about half a day or so. I realized then how dependent I really am on my family.

A. Picture Attached.

B. This picture shows a Political and Economic trend by showing our big man Uncle Sam in the hospital bed followed by falling domino pieces.

C. The picture shows its meaning by having Uncle Sam in the bed meaning he is weak and vulnerable in the economic situation. The falling domino represent why and what is making United States weak/vulnerable. The domino represent Arab Revolution(falling), Oil Prices and Consumer Goods. Uncle Sam represents the U.S. and it shows that we are going on an economic downfall.

D. The United States needs to get out of this economic downfall and bring it back up. We're losing money, making prices go up for everyone else. Especially on taxes, for example: Gas prices have gone up since 2000, from 1/2$ to 3.50$ + just for a gallon. Even if prices are rising, money is still being lost.

REHUGO ANALYSIS- Visual: Politcal Cartoon

A. Cartoon Attached- Artist: Ben Garrison

B. The trend of this political cartoon refers to Obama’s decision of having health care and the impact and damage it has on U.S. citizens.

C. The cartoon depicts how Obama’s health care system is hurting citizens rather than saving them. Obama is seen, with a sinister smile on his face, piling more leeches with different labels such as, “taxes, tyranny, IRS, etc.” all over the man’s body, sucking his life away. His life of freedom also weakens as the man tries to buzz for help, but no one listens. The women who stands beside Obama is shown pointing at her clip board exposing the large cost of health care with an evil expression. This shows how Obama’s decision of having health care is a lie to increase taxes, create fascism, and other political ideas to gain more money.

D. Many people today want and need the health care Obama has suggested. It has helped lives and gave people the opportunity to afford a doctor and be healthy. But in reality, Obama uses this system to collect money from citizens and increase taxes which would lead to destroying jobs. Although helpful in some ways, Obama’s health care reform can hurt people significantly.

REHUGO ANALYSIS- Political Cartoon.

A. Cartoon Attached- Made by Jack Ohman.

B. This cartoon talks about how much time has changed since African Americans have been able to recieve rights and become part of Americas society. In 1955 African Americans were not privilaged to have civil rights compared to "white" Americans. A women named Rosa Parks refused to give up her bus seat because she believed that she had the right to sit anywhere she wanted to. She believed that she had human rights as well as any person in that community. As once upon a time African Americans were considered less superior than "white" Americans, a man named Barack Obama is now residing at the white house.

C. The effectiveness of the cartoon is based on the setting of the picture as well as the two people who are in it. The setting sets the message by allowing the audience remember what had happened back in 1955 where Rosa Parks had refused to leave her seat just because she was not white. How once a African American were considered not even human but as slaves, they have prospered and to the point that an black man is now a president.

D. This cartoon to me is very inspirational because it allows me and other viewers see that one human being can change the world. Rosa Parks not only did she refuse to sit somewhere else but showed the world that America needed to revise its constitution and see that everyone is equal in God's eyes. This cartoon shows me that anythig can happen by example of Barack Obama, who is now the president of the United States of America.

b) The picture is implying that a person raised by
a village, or "society", doesn't end have good results.
c) In the cartoon, the muscular man is barking practically at the other two men and insisting that
he was brought up alright by "the village". The man looks rather boorish compared to the other
two men right beside him.
d) The cartoon is implying that the man is being sarcastic about being brought up right and
indeed being brought up by society is as great as people would think it would be. The proverb "It
takes a village to raise a child" is stating that it's the society's responsibility to take care of the
next generation of kids. It is seen through the man's words that society didn't do a good job. A
kid could be easily influenced and that can be as good as it can be bad. A person should be able to
tell their neighbor's kid that they shouldn't be doing something bad instead of walking away, in
fear of getting sued for "attacking the child in a verbal way". Back in the day, it was alot simpler
meaning, a child can roam around a village knowing they wont be hurt because moral values
have been established. However, nowadays life has gotten even more complicated and moral
values hasn't been actually established everywhere. All you hear is drugs and sex on the media,
and that's definitely not setting a good example for children out there.

REHUGO 5- Observation

A. Cartoon above

B. In this cartoon, the artist is presenting the trend that the society has started to depend more on technology to socialize. Whereas people used to have oral conversations, now they are interacting through computers and other electronic devices.

C. The cartoon consists of a group of people that are sitting around fire and socializing. They are having a conversation that involves only oral stories. On the other hand, there is a group of people that are sitting around a fire but facing away from each other. This second group is socializing through the use of technology, such as computers, iPad, or any other electronic devices. The headings of "THEN" and "NOW" indicate how the time period has affected how the society interacts with each other. The "THEN" is of the time when the society had no other method of communication than orally. The "NOW" is referring to the current generation that communicates with others through technology only. This visual is effective in the using comparison and contrast. By having a time period in which society had no technology, the artist compares it with the time period now where technology is the basis of everything. The cartoon presents a trend in which the society is based off of interactions through technology. Not many people have straight verbal conversations anymore.

D. With the technology increasing each day, new devices are being introduced. The new technology has the power to do things that could not even have been imagined in the past. Although the advances in technology are making lives easier for everyone, it also has its negative effect. This effect is that people would continue to depend on technology and the usage of it so much that the interactions among each other would drastically decrease. With not many interactions, the society would become a strange term. There would be no meaning left to a society in which everyone interacts. By relying on technology, generations would forget to talk to people outside of the devices. This increase in the social network can lead to the downfall of the interactions within a society.

B. The social trend for this political cartoon refers to the current situation of Egypt. Egyptian citizens are revolting against the president, demanding for a new leader and a new government. What the cartoon displays is how Obama does little to help support the movement.

C. In this political cartoon Daniel Kurtzman conveys how President Obama reacted to the current situation in Egypt. The people of Egypt are revolting against their president and the Egyptian people demand a new government, Obama contributes little to help support the movement. The picture of Obama “liking” the Egyptian Protestors’ Page displays how Obama is really unwilling to help the revolt. “Liking” something requires no work or action taken. The picture describes Obama taking no action in helping the Egyptian people with the movement.

D. The situation of Egypt should be handled gently, because simply butting into another country’s personal problems can cause the problem to worsen. It’s better that Obama doesn’t do anything about the Egyptian movement, than causing the situation even worse. Obama has no benefits to his actions, however there are no negative aspects to it either.

B. The cartoon comments on the trend that children believe that they are independent yet at the same are completely dependent on their parents.

C. The cartoon gives a comedic example of how children sometimes take their parents for granted. The little girl in the picture is a contradiction; she says she’s running away yet she still expects her parents to drive her to where she wants to go. It shows how children believe that their parents will always be there for them and take care of them, no matter what they do.

D. Most children never wonder if their parents will ever stop taking care of them and sometimes it will lead to children not appreciating their parents like the girl in the picture. A lot of children grow up with their parents always doing everything for them and never comprehend it until they have grown older. Children like to believe that they can do everything on their own but don’t realize just how false that belief is.

Rehugo Anaylsis: Cartoon

A. Cartoon attached above.

B. This cartoon is ironic in how it shows how social networking has changed how people interact with other people in real life. Social networking sites, such as Facebook, have become a huge influence in todays' culture. Children, teens and adults find enjoyment in the interacting with others on social networking sites.

C. This image has the couple facing away from one another, concentrated on their own computers, not interacting with one another. This is significant in that it shows how unsocial social networking sites have actually made us. Nowadays, there are people out there who are more concerned with how many Facebook friends they have and view all their posts and updates, rather than actually going out to a movie or dinner with friends. This recent technological advancement has taken its toll on people and changed our views of our "social lives."

D. I find this cartoon to be quite humerus because the situation being depicted often happens in real life. Many couples, friends, and roommates sit in the same room while both parties are participate in some sort of social networking activity. Social networking has consumed the lives of many people in today's world.

B. The societal trend being commented on in the cartoon would be that no matter what children always depend on there parents. In this cartoon a girl is shown standing with her bags in her hand asking her parents for a ride because she is running away. This cartoon shows the dependency children have on there parents.

C. The visual features parents sitting in the family room one is reading a book and the other a newspaper and a girl with her bags packed stating, "I said, I am running away.......Who's going to drive me?" This visual shows a typical family and a girl who is mad at her parents but still depends on them for a ride. Showing that children are so dependent on there parents even when they are mad. The bigger picture shows that in society today children struggle living on there own or starting there lives because they were so dependent on there parents doing everything.

D. In today's society teens are struggling moving out, going to college and starting there lives when they used to just live with there parents and worry about nothing. Especially in today's economy with not many jobs available people still depend on there parents for help. In this article a little girl is shown being mad at her parents and wanting to runaway but she still relies on her parents to help her. No matter how old or young you are we all need our parents and our family at some point in our lives and we always depend on them being there for us.

REHUGO Analysis - Observation: Family
A. Cartoon attached.

B. This cartoon is humorous because it portrays modern day “old couples”. These people really do love each other, but when you spend too much time around any one person, let’s face it, you’re going to but heads. When we are in fights or arguments we say and do things that we don’t necessarily mean. By the old man putting a scaled down replica of his wife in his model tied to the train tracks, it says I love you but in this moment I want a train to run you over. Of course he would never wish that upon her, but she may have been nagging, and when I see this it reminds me of times when my parents or my grandparents not getting along.

C. The effectiveness of this visual is that it shows that people have different ways of venting. This man ties his wife to train tracks in his model world but probably continues to love her in real life. If you were to show a group of married men and women this cartoon they would probably laugh. The woman might ask, at least my mom would, ‘why are you laughing, do you want to tie me to train tracks?’ my dad would lie and say “of coarse not honey” in a very sarcastic way. But at the end of the day, they are still married, and their feelings for each other do not change.

D. Again the man is only doing this in a model. It is more than implied that he wants his wife tied to train tracks. I think it is hilarious. I showed my brother and my dad and they both laughed hard as well. No one would really do this, unless they wanted to go to jail for murder. This would not be considered a threat unless one looked at it that way. Nothing more is implied other that the fact that he, in his mind or in his model world, wants to tie his wife to train tracks.

B. In today's modern culture, society relies heavily on the Internet because it's accessibility has changed our way of living. It saves people time and money through Internet banking facilities; people can deposit bills, transfer money through accounts, make Internet reservations, and much more. With this astonishingly rapid transfer of data, people do not have to travel as often. Contact can be perpetuated from almost anywhere in the world.

C. This cartoon effectively depicts how the Internet has affected and changed our culture. Human contact was once the only way people associated with each other. Now communication online is possible, the need for personal interactions has gone down. The tone of the cartoon can be interpreted as cynical, however, because human contact is essential for a functional community and is not a thing most people are willing to lose.

D. There are many positive characteristics that the Internet has, but there comes a point when it negatively impacts people's lives. With the growth of online communities, there is a decline in physical human interactions. Studies have shown that social skills have been eroded by online communications. People are now more inclined to exclude social contact with others because they prefer to use a computer to interact.

B. The societal trend being commented on this cartoon would be the gay community in the U.S. military. The “Don’t Ask, Don’t Tell” has been advertised around the country about the restriction towards the homosexual community to draft into the military.

C. The visual features a dead soldier in an American casket that is conceived as gay male since he says, “You Go Girl!” Lying next to the casket is a newspaper that says “Don’t Ask Don’t Tell Repealed.” The effectiveness towards this visual is that it is complying that either if the soldier is gay, he still fought for his country. The dialogue in this cartoon symbolizes the way some homosexual men act. “You Go Girl!” is effective of symbolizing the gay community. The casket with the American flag over it has its effectiveness by American pride and what the soldier fought for. The newspaper’s effect is the impact of what the homosexual has to go through.

D. This trend of “Don’t Ask Don’t Tell” is just another way of how America is contradicting its self. America says citizens can be free, but in reality they can’t since society is mixed up with what is good and what is bad. The homosexual community is willing to risk their lives to save our country. America is throwing away the chance of amazing soldiers fighting at war just because they have a bitter opinion.

b. This picture shows how the U.S Senate Immigration Bill introduced in 2007. This bill basically talked about how America should provide legal status and the process of citizenship for the 12-20 million people who were residing in the U.S illegally at the time. Plus, for those who were already citizens of America, their spouse and children were also given citizenship. Both sides of the debate argued intensely on this subject because of the points brought up. For example, the Conservatives argued how granting citizenship to illegal immigrants was equivalent to rewarding them for "disregarding United State immigration laws". The Liberals stated that only the intermediate family of the U.S citizen were granted citizenship were seen as unfair. There was also the issue of how people, who were on the guest workers program, overusing their privilege and eventually becoming illegal immigrants, and how this bill didn't follow procedure like going through a committee debate and approval.

c. The visual shows a family of 4 standing on a desert with a hand, holding an axe, floating in the air. The axe looks almost like its cutting the family apart, and there is a sign pointing to the family stating, "Immigrant Family", and another sign pointing to the axe stating, "U.S. Senate Immigration Bill". This is a very effective image because it really portrays the bill itself. If the bill passed, it would have torn families apart. It almost seemed like it was a normal day for the family and the axe was turning it into a nightmare. The eyes of the family even showed the fear they felt.

d. The U.S. Immigration Bill has left me with some mixed feelings. Although I don't agree with the separation of families because having a family is like having a support team, I don't think it is fair for those who didn't go through the process of citizenship to be living here. There is no sense of honesty in that at all, and if people truly want to live in the U.S., they would have to wait because that is the right thing to do. I know this world isn't very black and white, but this country could only fit so many people and the country is already struggling as it is. Plus, I would have to agree with the Conservatives because those who broke the law in the first place shouldn't have special privileges. That's unfairness right there, and yet other people think family limitations are more important than good morals.

C. The cartoon shows a smaller visual in the top left corner shows the parents talking about the children and they look very happy. A.Cartoon Attached- Artist: Jaybee

B.In the cartoon Jaybee is displaying how friends and family come together when one is falling from a cliff. Figuratively, Jaybee is portraying a family filled with friends or relatives that come together to help someone they care about. In the simple picture, he is showing that if someone really cares for another they will come help them no matter how far they have fallen. In other words, no matter how big the mistake made is, if one has a supportive family, they will get out of the problem in no time.

C.Jaybee embeds pathos by displaying a man in being assisted before he completely falls off the cliff. Pathos holds a great affect because there has been a time where everyone has been in a predicament therefore upon seeing the picture, the audience thinks back to a past experience where they were in trouble and with the support of their family and friends, they overcame their troubles. Jaybee is basically illustrating that with the support of a loving community, one can overcome any if not all their problems. In the picture, the man had tried something on his own and failed but end of the day his family was there to help on his feet again.

D.Everyone tries to accomplish their goals on their own but not everyone succeeds. For example, when a teenager grows up, their goal is to move out of their house and chase their dreams in the real world. If, for some reason, they fail to make a living or encounter an obstacle on their path in becoming an individual, the young adult immediately looks toward their family and friends for support. Similarly in the picture, the man encountered an obstacle and looked toward his friends and family for support. A family’s support is life long because one’s family shares their happiness and successes.

A. Cartoon Attached - Artist:Nick Anderson.

B. This political cartoon shows the discrepancy between what the average citizen believes the
budget is being spent on based on their own selfish desires, and what the budget is actually being
spent on.

C. There are two pie charts, the one on the left simply has the budget divided up into the real
sections that it is put into in. In the right the artists attempts to show the fact that the average
American citizen in this day and age has become extremely self centered, because the second pie
chart is divided into "waste" and "Stuff that benefits me personally". This also is commenting on
the idea that the intelligence of the American citizen is relatively low, because an intelligence
citizen would be able to discern the merit in the entire budget and not simply just say that most
of it is a waste.

D. Many Americans do actually view the budget spending as this. Though this is a highly
exaggerated version of what most see it as. Unlike in the pie chart that has only "waste" and
"things that benefit me personally" most people have a third which is allotted to "necessary
spending". Though this hasty exaggeration and generalization is used to emphasize the main
idea of the political cartoon.

REHUGO Analysis – Visual: Political Cartoon

A. Cartoon Attached-artist: Mike Baldwin

B. In this cartoon, the artist is offering a perspective on the trend of the support of one’s family on an individual.

C. The visual features a couple enjoying dinner, but behind the male counterpart is his family. Viewers are also able to see the family being the support in eating his supper, while he just sits there. He then mentions that, he has a very supportive family as it is states at the bottom of the picture “I have a very supportive family.” The primary source of effectiveness this gives on the viewers is the image of how the support of the family does not only happen during a child’s youth but also as they grow up to be an adult. A family’s support carries a long way and the individual then becomes dependent that someone will always being there to do everything for them, just like in the picture where the man is just sitting there as he is being fed by the rest of his family. While he is not doing it on his on, it shows that he is being dependent on his family to serve him by feeding him his meal.

D. Many individuals get through their youth and become successful adults in the future by having the support of their family. In this case, many become dependent on the support of their family that they are easily able to get through the challenges life throws at them because their family is always right behind them as a support system. There are many whom rely on the support of their family too much that sometimes they can’t really do it for themselves so they are in constant need for their family to do it for them. For example, a parents whose son is still living with them at the age of 25 because he doesn’t have the job and money to support himself. But if you think about it, one day, you will have to be independent because parents will not always be there to provide for you and support you. The support of one’s family continues to follow you throughout your life but that doesn’t mean you can’t do things on your on and make things happen for yourself. Of course for you to be able to do that you will need your family’s support, so you know you aren’t in it alone.

C. In the article Hitting a child is wrong, Murray A. Straus states that adults should treat children in ways that do not harm them because there are no circumstances that make hitting an acceptable form of punishment.
In Hitting Children is Good by RNW News Desk, they argue that hitting is essential when raising children because it makes them aware that they have done something wrong.
D. Straus incorporates pathos into his argument with the statement, "Nothing good forces us to act aggressively toward our minor children." When a person is angry, they are more likely to act in violent ways towards others. For example, when a child does something that aggravates a parent, the parent is more likely to have a negative response than a positive response. To a young child, hitting others implies that detrimental physical contact is the only way to have control over others. Parents set the example for their kids of what is right and accepted in society.
Straus utilizes logos in this article with a quote from the book Beating the Devil Out of Them: Corporal Punishment in American Families. It said, "The most basic step in eliminating corporal punishment is for parent educators, psychologists, and pediatricians to make a simple and unambiguous statement..." Straus is saying that instead of physically harming minors, telling them that they did something wrong would be more effective. Speaking to kids calmly after they have done something wrong sends a message to them saying that the parent understands and forgives them.
The author uses pathos in his article when he says, "If you interpret the Bible literally then it says that you can hit your children and that you can continue until the will of the child is broken." Incorporating the Bible into any argument is considered extremely emotional because religion is a topic that everyone has their own opinions about. The Bible has always been open to interpretation, so the author uses it to his advantage by stating that hitting children until their will is broken is acceptable.
"If you are going to hit your child and they are not really convinced by it then you might as well not do it." This is another example of pathos in the article Hitting Children is Good. The author is convinced that when you physically discipline a child, it is crucial to make them regret whatever they did that put them in the situation. He is insinuating that hitting or spanking should be taken seriously if that is what a parent decides on as a punishment.
E. "When people think of not hitting children, however, they often feel afraid and uncertain. What do they fear? Are they just uncomfortable with the unknown or the untried? Do they just doubt what they have not yet experienced?" In this series of rhetorical questions, Straus suggests that there is an uncertainty with what is considered to be the correct way to discipline a child. People have heard the statistics about how hitting young children is good for them, but is also morally incorrect. No one can prove that children become less well behaved if we do not hit them, so with all of the different options available, confusion and speculation will always describe the average parent when it comes to controling their children.
In the article Hitting a Child is Wrong, the author affectively uses repitition. "There is no other social, legal or moral rule that makes us spank our children. Social, legal and moral ties bind us to feed, clothe and shelter our dependent children." He repeats the words social, legal, and moral because they excellently describe the debate on whether or not hitting children is alright. Are people in our society hittin their kids? It isn't legal, but is it also a moral crime?
The author of Hitting Children is Good asks a rhetorical question: "Should the minister be able to make these statements without fear of prosecution?" The minster states that the Bible says it is alright to hit children. But by saying this, however, he is not sure if he will be considered a child abuser. People are entitled to their own opinions and have freedom of speech and religion; he should not be prosecuted for saying what he believes in.
"Children realise after a couple of times that the hitting stops when they start to cry, so they start to simulate this. So you have to keep going until a real change of heart is visible, until the child shows real remorse." This is an example of a hortative sentence because it tells the reader to continue to hit the child until they are certain they have learned their lesson. Parents who choose to hit their children should know when to stop the physical pain they bring their kids.
F. Physically hurting a child is how many parents discipline their kids because it instills fear in them and is considered a way for parents to feel superior. I disagree, however, because a physical attack on a child's body is not an acceptable thing to do. Hitting children might seem to offer people a shortcut, but in reality, it lowers their self esteem and can cause traumatic experiences.

REHUGO Analysis – Government: Year-Round Education
A. Opposing view points on Year-Round Education.
C. The articles are both from the year-round education site and are written by the same author, Sally no last name provided; she is a student at Purdue University Calumet.
a. The article against the subject states that Year-Round Education will not increase test scores or positively effect a student’s education. She believes that year-round education will cost more than a traditional school year and it will not create a healthier social environment.
b. The article for the subject states that American children are falling behind and are beginning to fall behind in literacy. She believes that year-round education benefits students’ ability to retain information and that Year-Round Education will reduce behavioral issues. She also believes that it will inevitably cost less.
D. Writer’s Argument:
a. In the article that opposes year-round education, the author is concerned that going to school all year will cost more than a traditional school year; “ Education costs are relatively high because of the increased number of days, teachers’ pay, school lunches, transportation, and more school supplies needed with the new schedule… air-conditioning costs.” This is logical and factual information. When the cost of year-round education comes up, these are discussed factors and the fact remains that a longer year will cost more money.
Year-round education will not necessarily help students academically; “… Teaching students during the intersession period caused teachers to be more tired because they were busy preparing for the next school session.” This statement is logical because in all reality how many parents want their kids to go to school and not learn anything? The answer is none; and when teachers do not have time during the day, they stay up at home losing sleep and are drained the next day, it is a bad cycle.
b. In the article advocating year-round education, she touches on social life and how it can positively affect the behavior of students; “Students enrolled in a year- round education program simply have less time to mischief, including vandalism.” The author’s idea appeals to the reader’s emotions, especially if the reader lives in a neighborhood or community where vandalism, whether petty or serious, occurs during the off seasons of school.
Advocates for year-round education believe that the new schooling system will provide students with a better learning environment; “…year-round education can reduce over-crowding and provide extra space, which can ultimately relieve some financial problems.” This might not make sense to some people; if the same amounts of students are in school, how does it reduce over crowding? But for those who do understand, this statement is both logical and factual. With fewer students, teachers have the opportunity to have smaller classes and not leaving confused children behind, which allows the students to produce better grades.
E. Rhetorical Strategies:
a. When the author is opposed to year-round education, she uses amplification to support his opinion; “ Education costs are relatively high because of the increased number of days, teachers’ pay, school lunches, transportation, and more school supplies needed with the new schedule… air-conditioning costs.” Her audience may have ignored this sentence in her article if it would have listed just one or two things, but with a continuous list of things that tax dollars pay for it grabs your attention and makes you think.
The author uses pleonasm to support his argument; “…hard on some teachers because they had to teach intersession classes, which are classes taught...” The author uses the word teach in different forms, teach, taught, teacher, and he does not have to. Anyone reading the article knows what a teacher does, but sympathizing for the teacher and how much they truly have to do help out her argument tremendously.
b. When the author is favoring year-round education, she uses hypotaxis to support his argument. “…students enroll in school during their break time to take more classes or make up classes they may have failed;” Everyone knows why students enroll in classes during breaks, by adding the reasons that most people know, it makes it seem like “fluff writing”.
The author uses sententia to support his opinion, he quotes Dr. William White from 1988; “one of the most noticeable education benefits of the year-round school is the opportunity for enrichment, remediation, and acceleration.” She quoted someone of power that also knows what he is talking about. It shows that the author has done his research and it may make one look further into year-round education.
F. Although I do value the time I get to spend with family and friends during the summer breaks and I often do wish that school was less stressful and that teachers did not give homework, I do forget things over summer break and that makes it difficult for the beginning of the next school year. I find my self with way too much spare time on my hands on days that I do not have plans with family or my friends. I do not see how a longer school year could cost less, bur if our generation is lagging and we are becoming less literate, shouldn’t tax payers and parents be willing to invest in the education of the future leaders of America? With year-round education we have more breaks, which allow us to release stress and be ready for what is coming when we go back to school. If year-round education means more time to understand the material that I will eventually be tested on, and if it helps me get into a better college then I am all for it.
